Mark Carney’s honeymoon phase appears to be ending.
The Conservative Party appears to be catching up to the Liberal Party, according to a new poll.
Support for the Conservatives (CPC) is at 40%, just below the Liberals (LPC) at 41%, according to an online survey by Abacus Data.
Newly elected prime ministers typically enjoy what is called a “honeymoon” period. People generally give a new prime minister a bit of a break early in their tenure to see what they can accomplish.
Carney has been criticized for failing to table a budget, instead insisting that he will provide one in the fall term.
Parliament is currently on summer break, and will resume in mid-September. Carney has also been criticized for not working during the summer to address the ongoing trade war with the United States.
Another recent poll by Nanos suggests the LPC has a 14-point lead over the CPC. It is not clear why there is a large discrepancy between the two polls.
Poilievre is still the preferred leader of the CPC, despite losing the last federal election, and his seat in the Ottawa riding of Carleton.
Poilievre will run in a by-election in the central Alberta riding of Battle River – Crowfoot, in which he is almost guaranteed to win.
Afterwards, he will be able to return to the House of Commons as the leader of the opposition. Conservatives on social media have expressed their eagerness to see Poilievre return to Parliament.
